As a support worker for people with disabilities back in the 80's, I had a unique opportunity to experience first hand, the amazing transition made by many residents of Fort Macleod when encountering people with visible disabilities.

At first, I saw people cross the street to avoid contact. But over the many following months, town residents began to do the opposite: instead of avoiding, they approached our clients and eventually developed new friendships. For, once they learned to look past the physical and see the people as real, unique individuals, full of humour, insights and passions, I believe the lives of both residents and clients changed for the better.

Originally from large provincial institutions, our clients got the opportunity to live better quality lives, integrate into every-day society and not only learn, but teach as well.

I fully support the efforts of the Its My History, Too! project and hope that many others do the same.

With thanks. - Randy
