Tools for Schools Africa Foundation
Our Mission statement: Tools for School Africa Foundation works to improve the quality of life in the Northern Region of Ghana by enhancing educational opportunity and improving access to post primary education. We have been working with people in the Northern Region since 2003. We are based in Red Deer, Alberta. The founder and chair of the Board is Marilyn Pottage.
Besides being a registered Canadian charity in Canada, we now have a registered charitable sister organization in Ghana known as Tools for Schools Africa Society. This allows us to administer and transfer funds very efficiently.
In May of 2010, students from the University of Manitoba will be working with us to build an additional dormitory on the St. Anne's Girls Boarding House in Damongo. The purpose of this project is to provide rural village girls with an affordable place to stay while attending junior high school. About 46 girls stay there now; another dorm would make space for an additional 24 girls. The budget for this project is about US$59,000. We thank the many individuals, businesses and service clubs that have helped us get this far, and hope you will choose to donate toward this project as well.
As well we will continue offering scholarships to outstanding girls from the Northern Region who do not have the financial means to attend junior high, senior high and post secondary institutions of learning. The recipients are selected by the headmistresses and headmasters in the schools according to four criteria: outstanding academic achievement, good morals, leadership skills and financial need. There are presently 14 girls on scholarship and in the 2010-2011 school year that number will increase to 28. Many thanks to our Scholarship Committee including Gabriella, Adrianna, Mary, Father Lazarus, and the headmaster from DASS.
