In May of 2008, four students from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine are traveling to Africa to work with the Abha Light Foundation (ALF), a natural health organization that is dedicated to providing affordable health care to the people of Kenya, a country where over 60% of the population is impoverished.
Established in 1998, ALF has grown into 11 health clinics throughout Kenya and Africa. These clinics serve slum neighbourhoods, with a heavy focus on treating people living with HIV/AIDS, an endemic that is ravaging the African continent. In addition, ALF also provides services via mobile clinics which are dispatched to rural towns and villages where residents may not have access to readily-available healthcare.
ALF is an organization that can be considered innovative as rather than relying on expensive imported medicines, which can stunt the provision of health care to poor communities, the Foundation treats patients with effective and affordable modalities such as homeopathy, naturopathy, nutrition and local botanicals. In addition, ALF also has firm ties to Kenyan communities as the Foundation has established a college of Natural Medicine where students are educated with the medicinal skills to treat their fellow Kenyans and provide their patients with quality, affordable healthcare.
This is why we, as future naturopathic doctors, wish to donate to ALF, for it is a noble cause and one we feel inspired to be a part of. Our aim is to help Abha Light continue to train exceptional natural health physicians, maintain existing clinics and open new ones, hire new practitioners and lab experts, buy equipments and supplies, and continue to provide their patients with free homeopathic remedies.
However, we need your help to make this endeavour a reality. By donating to this worthwhile cause, you will be instrumental in helping us assist the citizens of a vulnerable and developing country. Your donation will aid ALF to continue the operation of their clinics, further establish their college, and support volunteers in their quest to serve others through the art and science of naturopathic medicine, an initiative that is steeped in a noble and humanitarian cause.
