The uniqueness of the Agathos orphan-village concept lies in its plan for economic self-sustainability. Existing orphan programs require a continual influx of capital to maintain childcare, remaining dependent upon a recurrent source of funding. The purchase of a profit-making enterprise removes this burden. In essence, a one-time infusion of capital begins a process that provides all necessary financial support to successfully raise orphans to adulthood.
Because HIV prevalence is directly tied to poverty, and rates of unemployment in Africa often exceed 50%, Agathos seeks to implement measures to stimulate economic growth at the local level. These measures include the development of apprenticeships, educational and professional scholarships, and micro-economic loans for budding entrepreneurs.
The creation of a vibrant, thriving community, full of life and hope, is an Agathos goal. Encouraging an attitude of dignity, and a mindset of self-sufficiency, children are provided mentorship, love, discipline, education and skills to equip them for a successful life.
The catastrophe confronting us mandates a response of epic proportions.
Our challenge of caring for so many orphans and elderly is enormous, but with your help, it is not insurmountable. A great obligation faces us.
