Alex Lukas has always had the brains. Now he has the opportunity to end his family's cycle of poverty through a private school education at Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, B.C.
He's passed entrance exams with flying colors, now all he needs is some financial help to offset the costs not covered by a Brentwood College School bursary.
As a single parent in Mill Bay, Alex's father, Charles, has raised four kids on his own. Alex is 13, the twins are 12 and the youngest is 11. They have a younger half sister who is 7 and visits every second weekend. These kids know the value of hard work and help out at home all the time, and Alex has taken on a great deal of responsibility in helping take care of his younger brothers and sisters.
Alex's father is unable to work and supports his large family on his disability pension. A well-known figure in the Cowichan Valley area and a hard-working volunteer, Charles drives the 'Bread Van' that brings food to the community's less fortunate. Even though Alex will be missed at home, his father wants better for his son and knows that Alex's gifts are an opportunity to create a better life for himself and his family.
By going to Brentwood College School, Alex will receive a superior secondary education, will make great contacts for later in life, and will have a chance to move away from a life of poverty and be able to excel as he has proven already that he can.
Alex is also Olympic material in the judo world, and Brentwood's sports program will provide him with a platform to develop his athletic abilities as well.
It's estimated that Alex's costs beyond the Brentwood bursary will amount to $20,000/year for the next four years. The Harder Family Foundation has already committed $5,000/year, which leaves approximately $15,000/year to be raised.
Through GiveMeaning, friends of the Lukas family have set an initial fundraising goal of $8,000 to help cover the remaining costs of Alex's education. This will be an ongoing effort, as he has four years ahead of him.
A matching fund has been offered by an anonymous donor, which means that every dollar donated through GiveMeaning will be doubled (up to $8,000 total funds raised).
Click on the 'Donate Now' button to support this amazing opportunity for a very bright and dedicated young man. Your donation is tax deductible, and 100% of contributions through GiveMeaning will go to The Harder Family Foundation to be held in trust on Alex's behalf.
