       Anguei Angok Girls’ Boarding School is located about 25 km from Bor, Jonglei State Southern Sudan. Largely a local initiative, Anguei Angok Primary School has six permanent classrooms, two semi permanent dorm buildings and four permanent unfinished classrooms, which will be completed by the year’s end. In addition to community support, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) provides food to the school children. The school has been running for 2 years now with enrolment of 450 girls (grades 1 – 6) and it is expected to expand to grades 7 and 8 within the next two years. None of the classrooms have any desks; all pupils sit on handkerchiefs on the floor.

Problem/need statement

According to UNICEF, 1 in 10 women are illiterate and only 1 in 100 girls will complete primary school in South Sudan, the worst rate in the world. Female illiteracy rates have risen staggeringly because of South Sudan brutal 22 year civil war. With the signing of the peace agreement in 2005, a few schools were built across South Sudan, including Anguei Angok Girls’ Boarding School. Girls’ enrollment has grown impressively; however, challenges hindering their successful completion still remain. The students must sit on the classroom floors for lack of desks and there exists no sports equipment or facilities. Without the resources and motivation essential to a student’s success it is almost impossible for the girls to complete their education.

How sustainable is this project? Parents have realized the importance of educating the girl child and therefore, allowed their children to attend school. Parents have also contributed their meager resources and manpower to construct the school. This is truly a community initiated project; however, the small community, though big at heart, cannot provide sufficient funds and resources to meet some of the school’s basic requirements.

Goal: To support girl-child education in our community where female education has been inaccessible or traditionally not prioritized. We want to support them by raising funds to buy classroom desks for the school.

Objectives:

    * To raise $ 7,650 by December 2008
    * To buy 170 classroom-desks and sets of soccer and volleyball uniforms
    * To have the desks and uniforms delivered to the school by end of March 2009
