Native Egyptian Maus are some of the oldest cats in the world. Previously worshipped by ancient Egyptians, they are currently in danger of extinction through routine poisoning. EMRO, the Egyptian Mau Rescue Organization, is trying to raise awareness about these cats and provide homes to tame Maus. We have been recognized as a local Egyptian charity since 2005.
We presently have 40-50 cats at our shelter in Al Mokattam, Cairo, Egypt. We rehome on average of about 20+ cats a year both locally and overseas.
We have an onsite vet clinic for the cats and surrounding area, as well as boarding facilities for people who travel and wish to leave their cats with us.
We also have a functional furnished 2 bedroom apartment ("EMRO Suite") which can be rented out to visitors to Egypt for a competitive sum, which goes to the shelter's operating expenses. It can also function as a Bed and Breakfast for someone who want something different!
We have been featured in local papers and TV in Cairo, as well as in Finland, and Germany. National Geographic recently visited us and did some footage (see below for link).
EMRO has participated with the University of California (Davis)''s Feline Genetics study by providing cat DNA samples to them.
We belong to a Federation of animal shelters in Egypt and hope to help make "Mau" a household word!
