INTRODUCTION

Petauke Community Forests is situated in Petauke District in the Eastern Province of Zambia and takes up all the areas of Chief Nyamphande, Chief Sandwe and Chief Mumbi. It covers 100’s of square kilometers of once forested lands. Petauke Community Forests have been planting trees in the area for the past three years working with Community Schools that are located inside the forest. Records show we have 50 schools and over 10,000 students attending classes in these schools that are funded by the community. Petauke Community Forests works closely with these schools providing blackboards and school supplies. This year our objective of getting two blackboards in all 50 community schools. Our main objective is to teach both the children and their parents the need to preserve and reforest the once vast forest that sustained their forefathers and how the environment does affect their daily lives.

DESCRIPTION

We encourage open dialogue on the reasons for water shortages and the environmental changes that are affecting their lifestyles. The planting of trees for food, heat for cooking and an income can be done at village level with an impact that will be felt for the coming generations. This communication and exercise is done through the local community schools. Environmental education is provided by Petauke Community Forests Coordinators visiting the schools and surrounding communities. Seeds are provided and instruction on planting and care are taught. This is our third year with trees planted; the first year’s trees are already being used in seed collection (reforestation) and health products. Other issues facing the communities are also dealt with including: malaria and HIV/Aids prevention, women’s and children’s rights and safe drinking water. All this and ways to create sustainable livelihoods from the forest are what Petauke Community Forests was created for.

RESULTS

In the year 2007 Petauke Community Forests saw 13 of their 50 community schools receiving new blackboards, chalk, erasers and other school supplies. A new hand dug wells have been dug for a village of 350 people that until now relied on water from a waterhole shared with the local animals. 5 wells were rehabilitated and dug deeper supplying much needed water to desperate villagers. Most importantly, trees were planted at the community schools throughout the forest. Many Indigenous trees were planted along with Moringa for food and medicine, Leucaena for firewood and charcoal and Jatropha for the making of bio fuel. All three species are fast growing and are drought resistant. Over 2 million seeds were given directly to the Community Schools and community and were planted during last year’s rainy season.
