The Phonogarde was looking for a cause that would not necessarily benefit the surrounding region, but hold potential for wide, long-term effects.

Graydon & Laura were drawn to this cause because it involves education, sustainability, organic agriculture, and Manitoba. All things that are near and dear to their hearts. Plus, they're hoping that it means kids will get to eat, say, apple slices while learning the fundamentals of calculus. Eating and learning should always go hand in hand. Besides, what's more important than education and the environment?

In the writing From Naked Ape to Superspecies, David Suzuki illustrates trends in North American culture that have catalyzed its detachment from nature. Through this exploration, with particular focus on perspectives honed during a shift to industrialization and capitalism, Suzuki discerns there to be not one, but three valuable levels of economics: Natural, Cultural, and financial. Considering this model, Suzuki suggests we must honour and sustain each economy in the interest of human survival and a joyful one at that.

In the writing A Short History of Progress, Ronald Wright traces the evolution of past civilizations. Here, he discovers that the demise of each civilization is due to the fatal exploitation of natural resources in the interest of financial economics.

Considering these two writings, the idea is if we as a global civilization do not achieve sustainable balance amongst the three levels of economics, we as a species will suffer inevitable failure.

THE CAUSE ITSELF:
*Growing Up Organic* in Canada
Canadian Organic Growers (COG) is interested in shifting Canada towards organic agriculture - a safer and more sustainable form of food production. For this purpose, we have launched the *Growing Up Organic* project. This project has been designed to help farmers transition to organic management practices and to increase the amount of organically grown food in Canadian institutions, beginning with childcare centres.

THE GROWING UP ORGANIC (GUO) PROJECT WILL:
- Create a market for organic farmers
- Increase the number of organic farmers in Canada
- Link childcare centres with organic farmers
- Educate childcare centers about organic food consumption and production
- Develop local rural and urban organic food systems

WHO WILL BENEFIT (SHORT-TERM):
Children attending childcare centres in Manitoba

WHO WILL BENEFIT (LONG-TERM):
Canadians that eat food
Canadians that drink water
Canadians that need jobs
Canadians that breathe air
Canadians that taste, see, feel, sing, dance, know, bloom and grow…
(Also the World’s people that participate in all of the above)
