OA Projects* is working in partnership with the Youth Coalition for Peace in northern Uganda to build peace and gender equity amongst the youth by using soccer.

As part of the overall project (referred to in northern Uganda as Gum Marom - Acholi for "Equal Opportunity"), a Soccer League for Peace is going to be built in Gulu District. This League will leverage the unifying power of soccer to bring together war-affected youth with local youth leader and peer counselors to address issues related to the fallout from the conflict and the significant imbalance in gender equity.

The first stage of this project will have 8 groups (mainly schools but 1 or 2 or groups may be from a peace club or a rehabilitation center) with each entering two teams of 12 youth -- one female and one male team.  A total of 192 youth will participate in the league and will be supported by 24 youth leaders, coaches and peer counselors. The league will last for 7 weeks and the 8th week will be a large tournament for all 8 groups (or 16 teams). Each week leading up to the tournament, the groups will meet for at least 3 hrs to play soccer and to discuss a different topic (e.g., how to manage a violent situation) or participate in presentation by a community group (e.g., one on sexual and gender based violence).

We are asking for your support to help with the first seven weeks of the Soccer League for Peace in Gulu.

Our suggested donation is $22, or 1/6 of the weekly cost per group.

Thank you for interest in standing beside amazing youth leaders and groups in northern Uganda as they rebuild their communities after a brutal 22 year war.
