Hi everyone, and thank for you visiting my page. My name is Amanda and I am currently programme coordinator for the African Medical & Research Foundation in Canada - the world's leading African non-governmental health organisation. Over the coming six months, I will be embarking on a journey of over 1000 miles in support of AMREF. 26.2 of these will be comprised of the ING Ottawa Marathon on May 25th, 2008. Another 3.66 will be in altitude (5,895 m or 19,340 ft), through a vertical ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the world's tallest freestanding mountain and the highest peak on the African continent. The remainder of these miles will be covered right here in Toronto, as I push my mental and physical limits through 25 weeks of training. All pledges raised in support of this initiative will be donated to AMREF.
AMREF believes that health is a human right and that the solutions to better health can be found in Africa. Connecting people to health care, AMREF ensures that access to better health is not blocked by status, ethnicity, gender, geographic distance, or economic power. AMREF is committed to harnessing the strengths and abilities of Africa's powerful communities and passionate about the Continent's potential for self-sufficiency.
If you would like to learn more about AMREF Canada and their work, please visit their website at www.amrefcanada.org.
Thanks so much for your support and encouragement. Please give as generously as you possibly can.
Bill Gates on AMREF...
"AMREF is a voice for better health in Africa, a challenge because Africa is many nations and many cultures. It is difficult to overcome erroneous assumptions that exist about Africa—assumptions that underestimate the African people and their potential. AMREF is more than a voice. It is deeds: acts of compassion, of intelligence, of purpose. They’ve learned how to truly improve health in Africa by asking Africans what needs to be done and how best to do it. They speak out especially on behalf of those who are most vulnerable—women and children, the sick and the poor.”
