Since its inception in 2002, Kasubi –Nakulabye Vocational Centre has been serving the Kasubi-Nakulabye communities by offering basic skills vocational training and the integration of information and communication technology in community development and HIV/AIDS prevention and education.
The long term vision is for the Centre to be financially sustainable through revenue generated from services provided. This is extremely ambitious. In the meantime, we rely on support from people who value our work. In exchange, we provide a superior “return on generosity” in the form of lives changed.
There are many ways to support our Centre! (See blog entry "Ways to Support")
Vocational Training
The vocational training programme (VTP) was an answer to the void created by the lack of financial support for higher education attainment by the students who drop out of school. The VTP initially focused on tailoring, hairdressing, secretarial studies and computer literacy. Great popularity of the tailoring and hairdressing means the Centre now focuses primarily on these two courses. These skills are extremely practical and easily lead to work for the graduates, either in the many hair salons and dress making shops in the community, or self-employment in one’s own home/kiosk.
Achievements to date:
*Secretarial training: 10 students working in secretarial bureaus in nearby trading centre
*Computer literacy: 15 graduates
*Tailoring program: 15 graduates
*Hairdressing program: 72 graduates
Our next intake of students for the 6 month courses will be in August 2009.
Meeting our budget goal means that women in the community will:
* Not be turned away from tailoring and hair dressing classes that are full (we can hire a second teacher);
* Have access to the proper materials;
* Know their children will be learning and looked after in a safe environment in the Centre while they (Moms) are in class;
* Have access to financial expertise to launch their own businesses once they graduate from the program;
* Benefit from the increased self esteem and respect in their households and community that comes from completing their certificate and earning an income. This new position in the family/community reduces the women’s vulnerability to AIDS/HIV and empowers them to raise their own standard of living.
Community Outreach
The Centre's Community Outreach programme covers a range of important topics for youth and adults (see blog entry "Community Outreach Programme").
