Tekera Resource Centre (TRC) was founded in 2006 by Bruce & Brigitte Daley (Canada), Killian Keogh (Ireland) and Einer Rubilar (Chili) in Tekera Village, a very poor rural area in Uganda. TRC now includes a level II health clinic, a primary school, adult education, a women craft group and a community farm. TRC believes in empowering people to care for themselves and their families without giving 'handouts' or direct aid. None of the services at TRC are free; locals must pay Tekera Peso (token currency) or shillings to avail healthcare and education.
This community development a unique concept. Conventional plans have failed and continue to fail because there is no economic long term plans included. Long term projects (10 years +) like this must develop easily maintained systems along with nurturing and training the local people so they can continue the development. Education is the key to the future.
TRC is a registered NGO in Uganda and is in the process of becoming a Canadian charity too. Visit our website at

Project 1 - Extending primary school with 3 class rooms for nursery & P7
In 2007 our primary school ran P1– P5 classes and added P6 in 2008, but due to increasing pupil registration and demand for quality education, the school urgently needs funds to build 3 additional class rooms for nursery (kindergarden) and P7 and an office. The next closest school is 4 km from Tekera. Since these are farm children, many have to walk 4-7 km each way to go to school where there is no food programme.
A majority of the residence are from Rwanda who fled during the genocides. Many families are headed by one parent or grandparent due to AIDS. When a parent is unable to care or a child, It is common to bring the child to a village to be raised by relatives, which takes a heavy toll on the aged population. Many children's parents or guardian have difficulty paying the school fees, even though the fees are very low. We make concessions in some cases and offer alternative payment plans like crops or work or no payment in extreme cases.
