ABOUT US:

- Started in 2005 and have raised over $70 000!
- Multifaceted and delivers local training
- Establishes local micro-entrepreneurs
- Informs the people of Canada and Nicaragua of water issues
- Delivers sustainable solutions for the 50% of Nicaraguan's that live below the poverty line
- Based in the rural communities around the South Pacific town San Juan del Sur
- Works with the municipal government who fully supports and endorses NicaCan
PROJECT ASPECTS:
1) "Ecofogones" economical stoves -
built with a chimney to properly vent harmful smoke, environmentally more efficient, creates a cleaner and healthier home
cost $50
2) Bio-sand Water Filters-
produce clean and safe drinking water, prevents occurrence of water related illness
cost $65
3) Composting Latrines-
prevent human waste from seeping through the soil into the drinking water
cost $200
4) Preschools-
Project Nicaragua provides teachers wage, school supplies and manages building costs of 26 schools, and fosters educations which as vital in breaking the poverty cycle
cost: $20 / teacher / month
5) Dentist-
Visits rural communities to provide preventative dental care, extractions and oral hygiene
cost: $690 for 250 people
6) Volunteer groups-
Each year a student group travels to Nicaragua at their own expense to gain hands on experience and contribute to the project.
7) Sustainability-
To ensure the project is functioning year round it established a local team
