The Sababas Project
The Sababas project aims to support peacebuilding activities by enabling artists to address and share with others personal, local and global issues affecting their lives through music and video art in Tamale, Ghana. The project will build the capacity of professional and aspiring artists by setting up a professional audiovisual studio.
The Sababas project is an initiative of local musicians and video artists and is supported by FRONT (Friends of the North) and YPB (Young Peace Brigades) in Ghana and partners in Denmark and The Netherlands.
Why is an audiovisual studio important?
People living in Ghana’s Northern regions have some of the richest musical and cultural traditions in the country, yet the people face high levels of poverty and lack of opportunities. In addition, the northern regions have also been suffering from numerous inter- and intra-ethnic disputes, further limiting opportunities.
The northern regions currently lack a professional studio. Both musicians and filmmakers have played a significant role in advocating for social development on a broad range of issues including peacebuilding, and supporting their efforts is an important step in acknowledging the role of artistic expression in social development. They are potentially powerful actors for positive change.
Who will benefit from the studio?
The studio will directly benefit both professional and aspiring artists by enabling them to develop their artistic, technical and peacebuilding skills. It will also benefit the audiovisual industries by meeting international standards and music demands. The three northern regions will also benefit by connecting the studio with outreach activities supporting social development.
In addition, professional and aspiring musicians and artists from other regions in Ghana and internationally will have the opportunity to collaborate with local artists through workshops, exchanges and residencies.
What will the studio include?
The studio will allow for professional audio- and visual productions including: audio recording, video production, post production, CD/DVD duplication, digital editing and printing. It will also include a canteen, meeting/social room, sleeping rooms, and rehearsal rooms. In addition, there will be ongoing activities and workshops related to peacebuilding.
