Project Area - Sena is a township in Caia District,Sofala Province of Mozambique.
Kuwangisana Project - Perpetua Alfazema and her husband Joseph returned to Sena to live and work in July 2006. Perpetua is the manager of the home-based care program called Kuwangisana. The base of operations in Sena provides home based care support to people with HIV AIDS. Kuwangisana means "for the good health and well being of all". The program is beginning its third year and has expanded into many new areas in the last year. The orphan program has grown from working with 25 children last year to feeding up to 200 children a day and providing schooling, clothing, medical attention, day care as well as love and support. The program is trying to keep up with the needs of the community.
Orphan Support - Funds are urgently needed as food costs are rising at an alarming rate and they have increased the number of orphans who desperately need food support. The program planted crops this year which would have provided a lot of the program's food but all crops were destroyed during recent flooding by a rogue hippo eating everything one evening! This year our fundraising goal includes funds for the valuable meal program for the orphans. Promised food support from the World Food program has not come through even though the WFP encouraged Kuwangisana to increase the number of orphans. See the new blog entry from Perpetua.
The Community Center -The building project began with the funds raised through Givemeaning last year. Local people worked on the project through a "Food for Work" program provided by the Kapasseni Project, contributing to the overall local economy as much as possible. The meeting room is partially finished and being used as a classroom due to the high number of orphans in need of classroom and day care space. It is already being used to hold community meetings and HIV AIDS Education and prevention programs even though the roof is only made of plastic. The goal is to have this be a gathering place for people and thereby reduce the stigma of HIV AIDS by inviting all people to work, eat, visit, assist orphans, garden or make crafts together. The building project needs to continue to provide shelter and support for the wonderful programs Kuwangisana is providing to this impoverished community.
Funding and support is still provided by The Stephen Lewis Foundation and Medical Teams International for this project. The majority of the other funding for the project is in place for medical support, staff, supplies and operating expenses.
