About Josh Platzer
Josh was a loving sensitive and popular boy, who, in his early teens he was besieged with what he called ‘emotional problems’ which led to depression, and ultimately his preventable death.
The boy for whom the phone never stopped ringing had hanged himself on his best friend's porch.
About Teen Suicide
Teen suicide is reaching epidemic proportions:
Suicide is the leading cause of death among Canadians aged 15 to 24, second only to automobile accidents
and yet no one wants to talk about it.
Males are 4 times as likely as females to die by suicide
Approximately 400 children die by suicide every year in Canada
Major risk factors: depression, substance abuse, behavior problems
Josh Platzer Society: Goals
The Josh Platzer Memorial Fund
was set up in September 2000, a year after the tragic death of our fifteen-year-old son Josh. The goal of the fund, now a Registered Non Profit Society, is to provide resources in education and awareness on the topic of teen suicide to counselors, students, teachers and families.
Risk Talking to Your Children About Suicide
By promoting dialogue on the subject of suicide, it is the society's aim to reduce the stigma associated with talking openly about suicide, so that teens, in particular, will feel easier about sharing their problems with a responsible adult.
This would allow earlier intervention that may prevent another untimely and unnecessary death and save another family from the tragedy that suicide brings.
Educational Talks for Parents and Teachers
The Josh Platzer Society goes into the high schools to speak to parents, teachers and students. We give them hope that through awareness of the signs of suicide they can be of help to their friends and families.
Where Do Your Donations Go?
To date, the money raised by this
Giving Group
has been spent on renewing the supply of brochures that are available at community centres, libraries and other places where youth gather.
These brochures contain information about the prevention of suicide including:
Signs and changes that might indicate a teen is suicidal
Other risk factors
Resources available, including web sites and crisis line numbers
Tools to help parents and teachers talk about suicide to teens
Currently, the Josh Platzer Society's goal is to place
400 Suicide Prevention Posters
in the interior of buses and in bus shelters throughout British Columbia, so that every teen riding the bus will have access to life-saving information. To date, 400 of these posters will be placed in:
Vancouver
North Vancouver
Surrey
Victoria
Kelowna*
Prince George
Powell River
Sechelt
Courtenay*
*These areas have recently experienced a spike in the rate of suicides.
Please, donate and help us to save lives.
