Life in Africa kireka - a community based organization located in the outskirts of Kampala called Banda-Kireka. Otherwise known as The Acholi Quarter. More than 3000 families displaced by Northern Uganda's 20 year long war live in Kireka's sub-urban IDP camp. Now that the war is nearly over, many LiA Kireka members who live in the Acholi Quarter are longing to resettle back home but they need to engage in better income generating activity to support their families.
Since children are our future, so we bring the member children together and give them basic child services, apart from knowledge they get from school, during holidays they are taught discipline, career, hand work like peace tiles and also do games and sports. Our main aim is to provide them with nutritious food for their healthy growth and academic Excellency. Right now there are six children who are getting sponsorship both at primary level and secondary level and we also provide them with nutritious food every Saturday.
Our main aim is to provide members with skills so that to engage them in income generating activity so that to have full supports for their children’s education and school fees and for their general wellbeing. Apparently the poor women of Acholi quarters Kampala are engaged in activities like stone quarry which is really harmful for their health and too tiresome. Besides that these displaced women were actively involved in recycling paper beads bracelets which has become the only activity for every single house hold! This has resulted into who to buy whose? It also seems to me that the global market for paper beads is becoming scarce and that is why we feel there is need for diversification of women’s activities from hard work to soft and to a products that can be consumed locally.
Sanitation is a big threat to the comunity, and for that matter we have embarked on massive campiagn to have rubissh pits in the quarter so that to avoid littering of the enviroment. This will reduce the spread of maleria as mosquito nets still not affordable by these people who dont have enough income. As a matter of a fact, there is no prpper latrines in this community which is unheathy to the people. so there is emergency call to have few public pit latrines in this community.
Your support to this community initiative will leave a very positive impact in the lives of these Acholi displaced women of Banda Kireka.
