The Literacy Skills & Orphanage Improvement Project in Tanzania will work to enhance the conditions of an Orphanage in Arusha. Volunteers participating on this group trip may be assisting with tasks such as sanding and washing the walls to prepare them for paint, painting and creating murals in the bedrooms, and minor maintenance. At the end of each day volunteers will work with the children to practice reading and literacy skills. As a group, volunteers will create and implement interactive games that promote literacy.
Although literacy rates in Tanzania are higher then many of its neighbouring African countries, they are still significantly lower then they need to be. It is important for children to be motivated to learn to read and write so that they may break the cycle of poverty that many of them find themselves in. By completing their education these children will be creating new and exciting opportunities for their futures.
