Background:
Luo is a former miner who was paralyzed when he got caught in a cave-in mining accident 5 years ago. Now bed-ridden and unable to care for himself, his accident has impacted not only his life, but the lives of his wife and sons as well. In the documentary "To the Light", his wife recounts the bitter story of trying to give away their younger son. As he was their second child, the family incurred a large penalty ?ne for violating China’s one-child policy, leaving Luo no choice but to go down into the mine and raise money to pay the ?ne. After the cave-in and Luo’s paralysis, the family’s older son was forced to drop out of school and find work at a battery factory in Guangdong Province because the family could no longer afford his tuition.
When we talked to Luo, he told us he still occasionally has sensation in his legs and his spinal injury may be amenable to treatment. But due to the financial situation of the family, they couldn't afford to visit the major hospitals in Beijing/Shanghai.
