My name is Barb Peck.  I have been involved with the Women's Sexual Assault Centre since 2000 and am very committed to the work - it is not only about supporting survivors of sexual violence, but also about working for a greater change in our society.  Being at WSAC is not "just a job" for any of us.  We all put a lot of ourselves into our work, but the bottom line is that we also need money to provide all the services that our clients deserve, and to prevent more people from needing these services.  That is why I am asking you to sponsor me, if you are able to, for the Triathlon of Compassion.

On a personal note, those who have had to listen to me  over the years whining  about the 5k run, will be shocked to learn that I have also signed  up for an Olympic distance Tri - with a 10k run! In fact, I'm a bit shocked myself.  If you had told me 8 years ago that I would be planning to do such a crazy thing, I would've just laughed and said, "Me?!  I don't think so".

One of the things I like about triathlon is that it embodies a concept that I espouse frequently
(some would say, ad nauseum) - balance.  The Triathlon of Compassion especially has this quality, with its fun and supportive atmosphere that still provides a venue for people to challenge themselves.

Having choice about what kind of exercise to do makes it more likely that I'll get off the couch - if I don't feel like running (just for example), I can hop on the bike instead.  Switching activities uses different muscles, provides a form of rest, and keeps things interesting.  With the concept of balance guiding me, I can go further and for longer than I would have thought possible.

I'll let you extend the metaphor to your own life.
Cheers!

Barb
